Since last year the city of Toronto has made a concentrated effort to fight bed bugs. While most cities take a passive role in pest control, Toronto was one of the first cities to approve funding for specific bed bug initiatives that were designed to improve public awareness and help fight the growing bed bug problem in the city.
Just recently the city council approved an additional $250,000 to continue to fight the bed bug problem in the city. This was good news for the program as the previous funding had run out and the program was on its last legs. The money for the program is not being used for standard bed bug inspections. It is being spent on specially trained nurses whose sole purpose is to help low income residence battle bed bug infestations.
This is a very smart move by the city of Toronto as it helps the low income residents fight off the bed bug problem. Traditionally, these are the type of residents that wouldn’t be able to afford a bed bug treatment for their home. Because their homes would be infested with bed bugs, they were often spread to different rooms in whole apartment buildings.
Higher income residents who experience bed bugs are the most likely to call a pest control company to remove the bed bugs. This is why Toronto designated the task team to work with low income earners who don’t have the luxury of being able to afford a bed bug treatment option in their home.
While the bed bug infestation rate is growing in Toronto, they have launched a number of advertising initiatives to help grow awareness of the bed bugs problem. This is a very ingenious way to ensure that people the citizens of Ontario are keenly aware of how they can fight the problem.
If people know how to prevent bed bugs, the amount of infestation rates will be reduced drastically. This is one of the reasons why other cities across the globe should consider adapting a comprehensive bed bug policy to help ensure that they can limit and control the number of bed bug infestations that are occurring. Toronto offers an excellent model in terms of creating a program that is designed to target bed bug infestations in low income housing, which is often the major source of bed bugs in cities. By following this model, the world wide bed bug population would be reduced drastically.
