Bed bug interceptors work as detection tools
Bed bug interceptors can catch insects moving between the floor and a bed or other supported furniture, while other passive or active monitors detect different movement or attraction patterns. A correctly identified catch is useful evidence. An empty device does not prove a room is clear, and no monitor eliminates an infestation by itself. Choose a device by the monitoring question, room occupancy, furniture, placement plan and evidence behind its claims—not by a promise to “stop bed bugs.”

What is the difference between an interceptor and a monitor?
“Monitor” is the broad category. It includes devices that rely on chance movement, devices placed where bugs seek a harbourage, interceptors that sit in a travel path, and active devices that use an attractant.

The University of California Statewide IPM Program divides monitors into active and passive types. It describes active monitors as using attractants and passive monitors as exploiting harbourage-seeking behaviour or chance encounters with pitfalls or sticky surfaces. It treats furniture-leg interceptors as a hybrid: the sleeping person is the attraction, while the cup passively intercepts the travel route.
What does a positive catch prove?
A captured specimen can provide direct evidence, but it still needs identification. Photograph it in the device, record the device ID, room, furniture and check date, then preserve it in a secure container if the provider or identification service asks you to do so. Do not carry an open trap through the property.
Use our evidence-first identification guide to understand the visible features, but send an uncertain specimen to a qualified identifier. Bat bugs and other insects can resemble bed bugs, and the device name does not identify what it catches.
A catch does not establish the full infestation size, show every harbourage or prove where the insect entered the building. It also does not tell you which treatment will work. Those conclusions require inspection and context.
What does an empty monitor fail to prove?
An empty check means only that the device retained no specimen during that monitoring interval. Possible explanations include no bed bugs, no movement through that route, poor placement, a damaged or bridged interceptor, a device unsuited to the setting, a check made too soon, or an insect that escaped or was removed.
Do not convert a sequence of empty checks into a clearance rule on your own. The provider should define the monitoring duration, device locations, inspection method and completion criteria for the property. The US Environmental Protection Agency says integrated pest management should include monitoring for bugs missed during treatment; monitoring is one input to the decision, not the whole decision.
Bite-like skin marks do not fill the evidence gap. The UC IPM guidance states that dermal symptoms should not be used to diagnose bed bugs because reactions vary and several pests can bite. If skin symptoms persist, worsen or are concerning, contact a clinician.
When is a furniture-leg interceptor a sensible choice?
An interceptor is relevant when supported furniture legs form meaningful routes between a resting person and the floor. It is less informative when bed frames, headboards, bedding or nearby furniture create other routes, when the furniture has no compatible legs, or when a cup cannot sit level and undisturbed.
Before buying, check:
- whether the device physically fits the furniture leg without reducing stability;
- whether the manufacturer states which surfaces and furniture types are compatible;
- whether the capture areas are easy to inspect without releasing a specimen;
- whether the device can remain level, intact and identifiable between checks;
- whether children, pets, mobility aids or routine cleaning could disturb it;
- how the manufacturer says to inspect, clean and replace it;
- whether the provider wants a consistent device model and placement map.
Do not lift or reposition a heavy bed, sofa or recliner alone. Do not place a device where it creates a trip hazard or compromises furniture stability. Route lifting, furniture-mechanism and structural questions to a qualified person.
When might an active monitor fit better?
An active monitor may fit when the plan needs an independent attractant, including some unoccupied settings. That does not make active devices universally more accurate. UC IPM reports that both active and passive monitors caught bed bugs in its research.
Ask what published evidence supports the exact device and setting, whether it needs power, batteries, gas or consumables, and who safely sets, checks and disposes of it. Do not improvise a carbon-dioxide, heat or powered monitor. Compressed gases, dry ice, electricity and heat can create serious hazards when mishandled. Use only a purpose-designed device according to its instructions, and route gas, electrical and fire-safety decisions to the manufacturer, licensed pest-control professional and appropriately qualified trade.
How do monitors fit before, during and after treatment?
Before treatment, a monitor can preserve a specimen and establish a dated location record. Assign each device an identifier and record its location, installation date and checks. It should not delay professional inspection when physical evidence exists.
During treatment, the provider decides whether devices stay, move or are replaced. Afterward, keep the same identifiers so results can be compared with the baseline. Photograph a catch, preserve it as directed and contact the provider. Do not spray, clean or relocate a device without approval.
The EPA's integrated pest management guidance includes monitors among methods used to assess eradication, while its bed bug myths page says control requires multiple techniques and careful monitoring. An empty device does not authorise early unpacking; a catch does not authorise treatment.
What claims should make a buyer cautious?
Avoid a monitor advertised as guaranteed elimination, a replacement for inspection or proof that a room is clear after one empty check. Be cautious when the seller does not identify the device type, attractant, intended setting, maintenance requirements or supporting evidence.
Also separate product evidence from category evidence. A study showing that one interceptor design caught bed bugs does not validate every cup-shaped product. Laboratory performance does not automatically predict a cluttered, occupied or multi-unit property. Ask for research on the actual device and compare the tested conditions with your use case.
No price alone decides value. Compare the number of locations the plan must monitor, device lifespan, required consumables, inspection burden, compatibility with furniture and whether the provider will use the resulting record. A cheaper device that cannot be placed correctly does not answer the question.
What safety and care boundaries still apply?
Monitors are detection tools, not a route around professional treatment. Never add a pesticide to an interceptor or monitor. For pesticides, the label is the law. The EPA's pesticide-label guidance explains that labels legally define who may use a product and where, how, how much and how often it may be used. This article gives no product recommendation, dilution, placement or application procedure.
Never attempt whole-room heat with space heaters, fireplaces, ovens or improvised equipment. The EPA's legal-and-safe treatment guidance says DIY heating with space heaters or fireplaces has been known to burn down homes. Route treatment, heat, gas, electrical load, alarms and sprinklers to licensed or appropriately qualified professionals.
Landlord and tenant responsibilities vary by jurisdiction, lease and housing type. In multi-unit housing, confirm who may place devices in shared areas, access adjoining units, receive records and authorise treatment. Do not monitor another person's space without the required permission.
