What do bed bug eggs look like?
Bed bug eggs are tiny, pale, oval objects attached to a surface. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes eggs and eggshells as about 1 millimetre; its identification card calls them white and glued to surfaces. University of Minnesota Extension gives a larger approximation of 1/16 inch. That difference is a warning against identification by size alone. Location, attachment and nearby bed bug evidence matter more than whether one speck matches an internet measurement.
An isolated white object is not confirmation. Lint, crumbs, paint fragments, mould, unrelated insect material and synthetic filling can all appear egg-like in a phone photograph. Photograph the object where it lies and ask a licensed pest-control professional or qualified extension identifier to examine uncertain evidence before anyone treats the room.

A harbourage is a protected place where bed bugs rest and group between feeding periods. Eggs found within a harbourage carry more evidential weight than a loose pale fleck in the middle of a sheet.
Why do credible sources give two sizes?
EPA's current finding guide uses “about 1 mm.” Minnesota Extension describes white, oval eggs as 1/16 inch long; 1/16 inch converts to approximately 1.6 mm. These are inspection approximations, not a contradiction a householder can resolve with a phone camera.
Do not create a false cutoff such as “1.2 mm means bed bug; 1.7 mm means lint.” Camera perspective, focus, the object's orientation and the limits of household rulers make that precision unavailable. Include a millimetre ruler in a photograph without moving the object if practical, but use scale to help an expert, not to make the final identification yourself.
Where are bed bug eggs usually found?
Bed bugs tend to rest near places where a person sleeps, sits or remains still for long periods. EPA lists mattress and box-spring piping, seams and tags, plus cracks in the bed frame and headboard, among common hiding locations. Minnesota Extension also identifies mattress folds and buttons, bed frames, nearby furniture, cracks in wood floors and the edges of carpet.
For an inspection, stay with accessible surfaces and move from the primary resting place outward:
- Look along mattress piping, seams, tufts, labels and handles.
- Examine accessible box-spring edges, fabric folds and frame contact points.
- Check visible bed-frame joints, screw recesses and headboard seams.
- Inspect seams and joints of nearby upholstered chairs, sofas and bedside furniture.
- Record evidence in a second room rather than carrying it back to the bed.
Use a bright flashlight. Do not drag bedding or furniture into another room, and do not scatter stored objects while searching. Never open an electrical receptacle, appliance or fixed structure. EPA notes that bed bugs can occupy electrical receptacles and appliances; those locations require a qualified professional and appropriate electrical safety controls.
The search is for a pattern, not a complete inventory. Stop when credible evidence is found and let the pest professional extend the inspection. Continued disturbance can move insects or detach the very material needed for identification.
How can you tell an egg from lint or household debris?
Begin with the full scene. A possible egg fixed inside a protected furniture joint beside cast skins and fecal spotting is materially different from a loose white fibre found on freshly laundered bedding. EPA's evidence list includes live bed bugs, eggs or eggshells, shed skins, dark fecal marks and rusty or reddish stains. Several compatible signs in one hiding place make professional confirmation more urgent.
Use these questions:
- Is the object a discrete oval rather than a twisted fibre or irregular flake?
- Does it appear attached to the seam or joint rather than lying loosely on top?
- Is it in a protected place where bed bugs could rest?
- Are there several similar objects or other physical signs nearby?
- Can a wider photograph show the exact location as well as a close view?
These are triage questions, not a home diagnostic key. Mould can appear as a patch or staining rather than a discrete oval, but photographs cannot reliably identify every pale or dark household mark. Do not wet, smear, crush or scrape the only sample to see how it behaves. Preserve the scene for a qualified identifier.
What do empty eggshells mean?
An intact egg and an empty eggshell can be difficult to distinguish at household scale. An empty shell indicates that something hatched; it does not establish when it hatched, whether a nymph remains nearby or whether a previous treatment has finished the infestation.
Minnesota Extension reports that bed bug eggs hatch in 6 to 10 days under the conditions described on its biology page. EPA says the broader egg-to-egg life cycle may take four to five weeks under favourable conditions. Neither figure is a countdown for a particular home. Temperature, access to a host and the extent of the infestation affect what a professional finds and plans.
The practical conclusion is narrower: eggs or eggshells in a likely harbourage are evidence that warrants professional assessment. They are not a reason to wait a fixed number of days, change sleeping rooms or begin an improvised treatment.
Why are eggs difficult to deal with?
Their small size, pale colour, attachment to surfaces and placement inside protected cracks make eggs easy to miss during a casual inspection. The National Pesticide Information Center also states that many insecticides are not effective against eggs, which is one reason professional programs may require continued inspection and follow-up after eggs hatch.
That does not justify increasing a dose, combining products or treating more often. It establishes why identification and a plan covering every life stage matter. If a pesticide forms part of it, the label is the law. The label controls the approved pest, location, amount, preparation, protective measures and frequency. - Take a close photograph and a wider photograph that shows the room and exact surface.
- Record the date, room, furniture item and location on that item.
- Leave an attached object in place unless a licensed professional or extension identifier gives collection instructions.
- Arrange identification by a licensed pest-control professional or a qualified extension service.
