Signs of Bed Bugs at a Glance
The strongest signs of bed bugs are an identified live adult or nymph and characteristic evidence in a likely hiding place: dark fecal spots, eggs or eggshells, pale shed skins, and rusty-red stains. One isolated mark is only a clue. Bites, odor, or a dark speck cannot confirm the cause alone.
It helps to sort what you find into three practical levels:

What Actually Confirms Bed Bugs?
Confirmation begins with the insect. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's diagnostic reference says confirmation is best achieved by identifying an adult or nymph collected near the suspected exposure site. The University of California Integrated Pest Management program likewise advises confirming an infestation by detecting bed bugs themselves or their physical signs.
A specimen matters because many small household insects are mistaken for bed bugs. Photograph an intact specimen in its closed container beside a millimeter ruler, then record the room, surface, date, and time. An extension identification service or licensed pest professional can examine details a phone image misses.
Several signs together also strengthen the case. University of Minnesota Extension identifies bugs, cast skins, and fecal spots together as clear evidence. One mark removed from a hiding place has little context. Photograph the scene before cleaning or moving anything.
Strong Sign 1: A Live Bed Bug or Confirmed Specimen
Adult bed bugs are visible without a microscope. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's appearance guide, adults are 5–7 mm long. An unfed adult is brown, flat, and broadly oval; after feeding, it is reddish-brown and more elongated. Nymphs are smaller and can appear translucent or whitish-yellow when unfed.

Do not crush or discard the only specimen. Professional or extension confirmation outweighs absent bites or a clean-looking mattress.
Strong Sign 2: Dark Fecal Spots in a Hiding Place
Bed bug fecal spots are digested blood left near places where the insects rest. The EPA's finding guide describes dark spots that may bleed into fabric like marker ink. University of Minnesota Extension describes dark reddish or brownish spots and smears.
Context determines their weight. A cluster along mattress piping, behind a headboard, or beside cast skins means more than one black dot on a sheet. Ink, mold, dirt, food, and other pests can create dark marks. Color alone does not identify the source.
Take one close photograph and one showing the marks' location. Do not rub, wet, or clean the only sample before review. A home smear test may alter evidence and cannot replace insect identification.
Strong Sign 3: Eggs, Eggshells, and Shed Skins
Bed bug eggs are small but visible. The EPA lists them at about 1 mm, roughly the size of a pinhead, and describes them as pearl-white. They may be attached within protected seams or cracks. Pale lint, crumbs, and unrelated insect material can look similar under poor light, so an isolated white speck needs more evidence.
Nymphs shed their outer covering as they grow. These pale-yellow cast skins resemble empty insects. A cluster of eggs, eggshells, or skins beside fecal spots in a furniture joint carries more weight than one loose fragment.
Photograph the material where it lies under bright light. A qualified identifier can assess uncertain eggs or skins.
Supporting Sign: Rusty or Reddish Stains
Rusty or reddish marks on bedding can appear where a fed bed bug has been crushed. The EPA includes these stains among the physical signs to inspect for. They are supporting evidence, not proof. Blood from a scratch, rust from hardware, cosmetics, food, and other household sources can leave similar colors.
A stain becomes more persuasive when it occurs beside fecal spotting, cast skins, eggs, or a confirmed insect in the same seam or resting area. Record it before laundering the item, but do not treat the stain itself as a diagnosis.
Weak Sign: A Musty Odor
The CDC notes that heavy bed bug infestations may have a distinctive odor. That makes odor a possible supporting clue in an established problem, not a dependable early-warning test. People describe smells differently, and damp materials, furnishings, pets, and other pests can produce musty odors.
An unexplained smell warrants a careful physical inspection. It does not identify bed bugs and is not a reason to spray.
Why Bites Stay in the Weak-Evidence Column
A skin reaction cannot confirm bed bugs. The CDC states that the inflammatory reaction from a bite is not specifically diagnostic. The EPA adds that other insect bites, rashes, and hives can look similar, while some people do not react visibly at all.
Lines, clusters, timing, and photographs do not solve that limitation. Skin lesions can have causes that require medical diagnosis, including scabies or bacterial infection. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or a rapidly worsening widespread reaction. Contact a clinician for spreading redness, warmth, increasing pain, pus, fever, severe or persistent symptoms, or uncertainty about the cause. Medical care should not wait for pest confirmation when symptoms are serious.
A First Inspection That Preserves Evidence
Start where people sleep or rest. Low-level infestations can be difficult to find. Use a bright flashlight and inspect accessible surfaces slowly.
- Examine mattress piping, seams, tufts, labels, and handles without dragging the mattress through other rooms.
- Check accessible box-spring edges and fabric seams.
- Inspect bed-frame joints, screw holes, cracks, and the rear and joints of the headboard.
- Look at seams and joints in nearby bedside furniture and upholstered seating.
- If evidence suggests a broader infestation, let a licensed pest professional extend the inspection to curtains, drawer joints, wall gaps, loose wallpaper, appliances, and other protected spaces.
The EPA notes that a credit-card-width crack can shelter a bed bug. Do not open every crack. Never remove receptacle covers, enter energized equipment, or dismantle fixed furniture. Report evidence in inaccessible or electrical areas to the pest professional.
Take a close photograph, a wider view showing location, and an image with a known scale. Record the room and exact surface. Keep a safely contained specimen for identification.

The table deliberately gives no numerical score. A correctly identified insect is decisive in a way that ten unexplained skin marks are not.
What If You Find No Physical Evidence?
One inspection that finds nothing does not prove a room is clear. The EPA notes that small infestations are harder to locate. A skin reaction or household mark may also have another cause.
Record where and when you inspected. Avoid shifting sleeping locations or moving loose belongings while the question remains unresolved; that can make a real infestation harder to map. If concern persists, request professional inspection rather than repeatedly dismantling furniture.
Cornell Integrated Pest Management recommends submitting samples to an extension service for reliable identification. A definite identification is more useful than more photographs of ambiguous specks.
What Not to Do on Suspicion Alone
Do not spray, fog, heat a room, mix household chemicals or so-called natural treatments, or discard furniture because of a bite or stain. Improvised heat and chemical treatment can cause fire, poisoning, exposure, and dispersal of the insects. They can also destroy the specimen needed to identify the problem.

Arrange professional assessment when an insect has been identified, several compatible signs occur together, evidence appears in more than one room, or suspected hiding places are inaccessible. The EPA's hiring guidance describes bed bug treatment as complex and advises involving an experienced pest management professional promptly. Delaying effective control while trying unsuccessful home remedies can allow the infestation to spread.
In apartments, dormitories, shelters, and other multi-unit buildings, notify the responsible property contact in writing and preserve your documentation. Do not assume who must inspect, treat, or pay. Landlord and tenant duties differ by jurisdiction and housing type, so check current local housing and public-health rules.

Ask whether the evidence can be identified, placed in a likely hiding site, and supported by other signs. A confirmed adult or nymph is strongest. A physical cluster deserves qualified review. A bite, stain, or odor alone remains suspicion. Preserve the finding, document its location, and obtain qualified identification before treatment.
